I loved this book, I loved the demons all so different with so much personality! This author created such a fantastic universe and once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I hope she writes a sequel, there's so much more this group of characters need to do. -J. French (Amazon)
Humans Keep Failing, Demons Are Tired, and I Couldn’t Stop Reading
Descend by Jen Lyon is one of those books that grabs you by the soul (assuming you haven’t already lost yours in a pile of laundry or endless doomscrolling) and doesn’t let go. Sarah, the Demon Keeper of Earth, is a phenomenal lead—complex, powerful, and burdened by the weight of saving a species that doesn’t seem to want to save itself; she’s trying to stop humanity from self-destructing… again.
Humans, shocker, can’t get their crap together. Our moral compass? Busted. Our progress toward enlightenment? Stuck in eternal buffering. And so we keep getting recycled back into the descent cycle like a bunch of spiritually challenged toddlers who refuse to learn from time-out. Sarah’s job? Break the cycle before we nuke ourselves into cosmic irrelevance.
This book is clever, layered, and surprisingly emotional—yes, I may have laughed out loud and had an existential crisis at the same time. The flashbacks are brilliantly done, slowly dropping clues like spiritual breadcrumbs, and the cast of characters (both human and demon) is full of personality, sass, and complexity.
It’s got heart. It’s got grit. It’s got demons who are way too relatable. And at the center of it all is Sarah—tough, tired, and trying her damnedest to save a species that seems committed to its own destruction.
And it’s not just doom and gloom—Lyon layers in moments of hope, heartbreak, and brilliant flashes back through time that slowly unravel the deeper truths behind humanity’s downfall.
If you like your fantasy with a little bite, a lot of depth, and a generous helping of “wow, that hits uncomfortably close to home,” then Descend needs to be at the top of your list. By Tamie Z (GoodReads)
What a fun book! It took my imagination on a wild ride starting in Chapter One, dropping it off 400 pages later tired, sweaty, and so exhilarated. If you're looking for a book that's not the same concepts wrapped up in a fresh package, this is a great pick. Hoping for a sequel!!!

Fans of epic fantasy won’t want to miss Descend by Jen Lyon. In this imaginative tale, death is not the end—it’s only the beginning. Arrivals was the first place humans returned to after their death. The newly deceased were assisted in their predetermined sections: Lo-Reps, Mid-Reps and High-Reps.
The shift from Earth to Descend is softened by dim lighting, but the reality is harsh—most souls now belong to the High-Reps, individuals who have returned to life over 150 times without successfully Ascending. Once, Ascension was common. Now, humanity is stuck in an endless cycle between Earth and Descend. Those who ascended live for millennia, but humanity’s increasingly self-destructive nature threatens to wipe them out within 3,000 years.
Sarah, the Demon Keeper of Descend, must devise a way to save the human race. ReTraining efforts have failed. Can someone—or something—intervene to break the cycle and save the universe?
Jen Lyon’s vivid world-building is truly impressive. The story is packed with action, the pacing is quick, and the writing is rich with detail. The concept of Ascend and Descend is both original and compelling, and the characters are thoughtfully crafted. A must-read for fantasy lovers.
